“It is not finished yet. There is still a lot of work to do,’’ said India’s first Olympics silver medal winner in badminton, P.V.Sindhu. These words probably reflect the intent with which the Indian contingent returned from the Rio Olympics, 2016.
These sports persons were hardly highlighted by the media before they were selected for the Olympics. Even while praising sky-high the two medal winners and a gymnast who did a death-defying vault, the media has been unrelenting in its criticism of those that didn’t win any medal, scathingly dismissing a lifetime of hardship and effort of the athletes and their coaches in qualifying for the Olympics despite facing several obstacles. In BE’s tribute to P.V. Sindhu, wrestler Sakshi Malik, and gymnast Dipa Karmakar, we also acknowledge the grit and merit of Team India at the Olympics.
