The author Shubhra Shah launched her second book “Leatherback and the Strange Place” at ICCR, Kolkata on September 28, 2019. The book was released by the author along with Rupkatha Sarkar (Principal of La Martiniere for Girls, Kolkata), Dr. J. R Ram, a psychiatrist and Shruti Mohta, a campaigner for organ donation. Shruti was also the moderator for the evening. Dr. H. P. Kanoria, Chairman, Srei Foundation, along with many eminent personalities attended the event.

Shubhra Shah’s first book ‘Leatherback’s Big Win’ received huge appreciations and touched many little readers’ minds. Her first book is a tale through a tortoise which would enthrall both adults and the children. It encourages many conversations in the house as it addresses issues like ‘substance abuse’ and ‘cheating in sports.’ It encourages children to speak out their problems either to a counsellor or to their parents.

The author said that the book ‘The Dalai Lama’s Cat’ by David Michie inspired her to create animal characters for her book. She said that the ‘tortoise’ in her story symbolises stability, agelessness, and steadiness.Being a psychologist herself and a single parent of the two children, her books deal with children psychology very deeply.

Her second book ‘Leatherback and the Strange Place’ is another tale through the tortoise who already has a keen insight into human world. In this story, she has added few villains as she feels the children should read about the negative forces present in this world. Children should not be made to feel that everything and everyone is good. They should read stories and know that there are all kinds of people in this world and yet one has to follow the path of honesty and not give in to corruption. Her stories encourage children to fight all odds and come out of their miserable comfort zones and move forward. Her books hold mothers in a special place and she has shown mother as a person who can make mistakes and does her best for her child.

Shubhra said, “Stories can change lives, it helps you to uplift your mood and sometimes it restores hope and faith- something which get worn out in this competitive world. Parents should take books more seriously and invest in them, rather than invest in senseless movies.”
