Lord Shiva went into isolation and meditation after Mother Sati, wife of Shiva sacrificed herself in Yagna (holy fire Place) being performed by her father Daksha. She was in fury As her husband Lord Shiva was insulted by not providing a Seat in the Yagna by her father Daksha. How a wife can bear Insult to her husband by her own father?

 Madan (Kamdev) – the lord of lust and passion was deputed By the Gods to disturb the meditation of Shiva and to instill passion in Him again and make Him fall in love with Gauri So that a great hero and warrior may be born of this marriage, Capable of leading the army of Gods to victory against the Demons.

Madan was successful in his mission but fell a victim to Shiva’s wrath, being burnt by the fire emerging from Shiva’s eye in the forehead. Kamdeva gave his life to serve semi-gods and humanity. Later, Uma gave birth to Kartikeya who won victory over the demons.

Lord Shiva married Mother Uma (emanation of Divine reality) in the presence of earthly parents Himalaya and Menaka. Two bodies and souls were unified, but they retained their individual characteristics and personality for the welfare of the universe. All are merry making and blissful.

The Universe is blissful. Radiant Uma is no ordinary girl. She is the eternal dawning of non-dual wisdom sages rarely get a glimpse of her formless form in their most profound meditation. Even Shiva cannot comprehend her from his state of total absorption. According to the Puranas, worshipping Lord Shiva on Maha Shivaratri, cleanses one of all one’s sins.

 Even Viashnavas, the Devotees of Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna, pray to Lord Shiva for his mercy on this day as they believe that He is the Lord of The Lords. Gaudiya Vaishnavas in Vrindavana, visit the temple of Gopesvara Mahadeva and offer flower garlands and water from the Ganges to the Holy Linga there.

 Lord Shiva is the God of meditation and destruction. When negativity attacks, our consciousness adversely destroys, so That the new, the bliss, the awakening within may transmute all those negative tendencies into positive, pure ones. So, Shiva is also said to be the destroyer of the destructive forces including the past negative Karmas (sin).

The Shivratri is the night of meditation, the night when the grace of Lord Shiva is at its maximum and the awakening force Is with vigour. So, by meditating on Shivarathri, it is very easy to attain Lord Shiva’s grace and get soaked in his energy, deep In meditation. Maha means great, and Maha Shivaratri is the great night of Shiva, greatest among all Shivaratris.

 Husband and wife should live in harmony but by maintaining Their individual personalities. Rich parents should treat their Daughter’s husband with due respect even though the husband has less means.
