A great personality : man of principle
12:32 pm

Dr. H. P. Kanoria

I have had the privilege of meeting a great personality, the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 2000 – 2011, Shri Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. I am overwhelmed by his gentleness, humility, integrity, dedication for the welfare and growth of the people, state and nation. Buddhadeb Babu was more than just a politician. He was a man of principle who never allowed personal interest to cloud his judgment or action. His demise on August 8, 2024 marked the end of an era for those who knew him and many more who were touched by his commitment, simplicity, modesty and his ideology for communal harmony.

He studied Bengali Literature at the Presidency College, Kolkata and secured BA degree in Bengali in 1964. He worked tirelessly for education, industrial development, employment, agriculture, horticulture, blue economy and vocational training especially for women. His efforts extended to environment conservation. He played a key role in initiatives aimed at preserving natural resources and

improving the living conditions of the poor. He created the opportunity for investment in steel, chemical, petro-chemical, information technology, automobile and others. Although some of his projects were hindered by opposition and other challenges but his dedication to the cause never wavered. During the turbulent times of the Nandigram movement, he famously declared that land would not be acquired without the consent of the people, showcasing his commitment to respecting the voices of those he served.

He was an active contributor of arts and literature. His translations of the works of Mayakovsky and Gabriel Garcia Marquez brought global literature to Bengali readers, and his writings on Jibanananda Das and Manik Bandopadhyay are celebrated worldwide. He authored poetry, plays, and essays that tackled complex issues such as anti-fascism and communalism, contributing to the intellectual and cultural discourse of his time. His contributions to Bengal’s cultural landscape were profound. He played a pivotal role in elevating the Kolkata Film Festival to international standards, and his efforts in establishing

Rabindra Bhavans across districts ensured that cultural activities flourished throughout the state. He was also instrumental in upgrading the Kolkata Book Fair, making it a prominent event on the international stage.

His legacy of gentleness, kindness, dedication, and cultural stewardship will continue to inspire future generations. His mortal remains was handed over to NRS (Nil Ratan Sarkar) Medical College and Hospital for research, a great service to humanity. We pay our tribute to him. We cherish all his virtues. Our deepest condolence to his family members.

Lal Salam!
