There’s a need for job opportunities and work space exposure for undergraduates and graduates. TeamLease, an Indian human resources service provider, has started a temporary staffing venture in India to help corporates to
obtain employees and freshers. Temporary staffing is a process where an organization recruits staff for a fixed period of time. These employees are commonly known as associates. The corporates get the staff they need and the employees get work place experience.

Sudeep Sen, the Assistant Vice President of TeamLease Services, spoke to BE about the model of temporary staffing. He said, “The business development team of the staffing companies connects with the HR / Finance / Procurement department of the client organizations. They discuss the scope of work and submit a proposal. An agreement is signed stating the deliverables on part of client organization and staffing firm. The staffers are either hired by the staffing firm or the client identifies them and puts them in the payroll of the outsourced partner like TeamLease Services Limited. Client organization takes care of the functional and work related assignments while the staffing firm does on boarding, payroll processing, disbursement of wages, compliance management, issue of pay-slips, issue of letters, exit letters.”

Benefits for employees

The salary and statutory benefits like Providential Fund (PF), Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), etc. are processed by the staffing firm and paid by the client organization. The pay-slips, the letters like contract extension letters, experience letters, salary revision letters, certificates of appreciation, facilitation of rewards and recognition, processing of the reimbursements like travel, mobile, and issue of ID cards are also directed  by the staffing firm. Temporary staffing gives a chance to the employees to become permanent staffs of the company, depending on vacancy and subjected to clearance of selection procedures of the client organization. Most of the organizations in India have started this concept. The growth has increased to 22% in the last three years on a year-on-year basis. The offer letter is issued by the staffing firm.

Speaking on the benefits received by the employees, Sen informed, “The contract ensures that there is no exploitation of the wages. They also get benefit of private insurance like Group Medical Coverage (GMC) and Group Personal Accident (GPA), wherein the monthly premium is part of their CTC. Their salaries are transferred to their respective bank accounts. Salaries are released on time keeping adherence of payment of wages account or as per the compliant payroll calendar decided between the client organization and the staffing firm. Employees receive the experience letter on the expiry of their contract. If the contract is extended, they get contract extension letters. If their salaries are revised during the course of their contract, they get salary revision letters. Apart from this, they get the chance to improve their skills. These associates are also entitled to benefits like statutory bonus, gratuity (as per eligibility criteria), and maternity benefits.”

A contract job serves as a blessing to the freshers. With the completion of their contract period, their resume has added value. This fetches them better jobs in the companies that search for employees with experience.

Sudeep Sen added, “We have 1.10 lakh associates deputed at 1,000 + locations. The business development team connects with the corporate houses at the metropolitan cities and also other cities. With the combination of centralized operations, multilingual contact centre and mobile App, we have penetrated several remote areas. We aim at extending our service in the coming years. Our turnover has been ` 2500 crore per year.”

The concept of temporary staffing has been widely accepted. Companies in the eastern part of India are gradually warming up to this concept of recruitment. They are aggressively looking at hiring temporary workers to beat margin pressures and facilitate just-in-time hiring. Sectors such as consumer durables and broadband services have hired extensively for job profiles like B2B sales, field sales, counter sales, and customer support. Overall, temporary hiring from the region has increased by 12%.
