The second episode of DocTalks with Turiya Talks which took place on January 5, 2021, had as guests Dr. Chirajit Datta, senior consultant ENT, CK Birla Hospitals, and Dr. Arjun Dasgupta, consultant ENT, CMRI, Kolkata. The doctors discussed “The impact of Covid on Ear, Nose and Throat Problems” with host Sandhya Sutodia, Co-Founder, Turiya Communications LLP. Our health partner for the show was SastaSundar, an online pharmacy and digital platform of healthcare.

“Loss of taste buds and smell is one of the symptoms of Covid-19”, in this episode of DocTalks, Dr. Arjun Dasgupta has shed some light on this statement. He said that anosmia which is the loss of smell has always been present but since the coronavirus pandemic, this took on the forefront. Therefore, he advised that people suffering from anosmia needs to do a Covid test. He has also put emphasis that coronavirus attacks the upper respiratory tract, as the virus stays at the back of the nose. This suggests that ENT patients have a greater risk to get Covid-19. Dr. Chirajit Datta on the other side told how sleep apnea can be avoided. He has put emphasis on the fact that “basic lifestyle changes are important like weight loss, not taking sleeping pills and eating healthy”.

On a concluding note, both the guests reiterated the fact that it is of utmost importance to “keep wearing the masks, keep social distancing and washing hands regularly is primordial and everything else like gargling or steam inhalation is secondary”. They said that hygiene and social distancing is primary; medication is secondary.
